Are these similar to AGMs? I've not come across them before and needing to change my batteries these have been suggested. Any thoughts?

It means they are sealed. They can be sealed lead acid, AGM or Gel. It's almost meaningless in this context, anyone making a big deal of it to sell you some batteries is probably a bit suspect. If they are suggesting specific batteries, post here for further clarification.

They can be used on their side or upside down without leaking, not that you would want to do that for too long, just in case.. If you are going to do a lot of rough weather sailing or very long exaggerated tacks you don't have to worry about acid leaking out so therefore not a bad idea on a boat.
