Manual says stop lever;pull out, shove in; have on full throttle.Trouble is throttle in cockpit, start button down below. So she revs up max before I can get to throttle. Any suggestions?(have a cup on throttle on piece of string)

Remote start button in parallel with normal start button , either fixed and located near the throttle control or on a plug and socket and a long cable .

! Amazed. Had TG with the 2030 for 25 years, at worst had a little throttle but usually on tick over. Still started instantly. It needs 3/4 seconds of glow plugs of course - no glow, no start. I don't recall it said full throttle in the manual but it has gone with the boat.

The starting instructions depend which edition of the manual you read.

The 1993 edition says,
1. Disengage the control lever. Place the lever in the full speed position.
2. Press the “Power ON/OFF” switch (instrument panel comes on). Push the toggle switch down (“Alarm test”) and check that the alarm sounds.
3. Push the toggle switch up to the “Glow” position and hold it there for about 20-30 sec. (max. 60 sec.).
4. Press the start button at the same time. Let the button and the toggle switch go when the engine starts.* Reduce the engine speed to idle.
*NB. Do not run the starter motor for more than 20 sec.​


Later editions do not suggest advancing the throttle lever from the idle position and specify a shorter preheat time They say,
1. Move the control lever to the neutral/idle position.
2. Activate the instrument panel by pressing the ”Power ON/OFF” switch. The three warning lamps come on and can be checked.
Check that the acoustic alarm is operating by pushing the rocker switch to the ”Alarm Test” position.
3. Push the rocker switch to the “Glow” position. The indicator light comes on and the glow plugs are connected to pre-heat the engine. Let the glow plugs remain activated for 10 seconds (max. 30 seconds).
IMPORTANT! Always pre-heat the engine (even when it is at operating temperature).
4. Press the starter button. Release the starter button as soon as the engine starts.
IMPORTANT! If the starter motor is engaged for its maximum engagement time (20-30 seconds) let it cool down for five minutes before trying to start the engine again.
5. Warm up the engine at low speed and low load.
IMPORTANT! Do not race the engine while it is cold.​
 
OP - do you mean Volvo Penta MD2030, or Volvo Penta 2003? From your post sounds like the latter. If the former just set the throttle for 1200-1400 (you could mark the position) few seconds of glow plugs and start.
 
Do you mean a 2003 and not a 2030? A 2030 should start at idle after waiting for glow plugs, but you mention pulling and pushing the stop lever which you need to do for a 2003. Either way as has been already said, another push button mounted somewhere in cockpit, even in a cockpit locker out of the elements, would solve your problem. You need an ignition live to the switch and a wire from the switch to the starter. You then turn the ignition on down below and operate the starter from the cockpit.

Whichever engine ( 2003 or MD2030) there is starter relay in the relay box so the connection would have to be made to this not directly to the starter solenoid.

For a cold start: Disengage gear and advance throttle a little (equivalent of perhaps 1200rpm). 8 seconds glowplug heat and start.
Hot start: no glow plug, no throttle, just push starter switch.

I think there has been some confusion, the start sequence being talked about is the 2000 series one. My VP 2030 would start at the twitch of the key!
 
I originally had a 2030 in my boat built 1998. I would confirm that the start sequence was the latter in post #5 and I do not recall a failure to start.
 
My 2003 has a similar set up but I can just reach the start button in the cockpit by leaning in from the cockpit. My understanding is that the throttle has to be on max when the priming lever is pulled, so as to get a proper shot of fuel in the cylinders. I do this but then throttle back to about 3/4 throttle (less if it is warm outside) before pressing the start button. After a few seconds (to get there) I throttle back to fast tickover. The engine starts very reliably with this regime.

At the start of the season I turn it over a few times with a spanner ( decompressor lifted) so as to spread a bit of oil in the cylinders.
