VP2003 Sea Water Pump - a few queries

I am reconditioning the sea water pump on my VP2003 and, having successfully dismantled it, now have three questions about what I found inside.

1. My pump includes a plastic spacer, with four castellations (so that it doesn't block the tell-tale holes in the casting), that fits between the two seals. It does not appear on the diagram in the workshop manual. Is it a later mod? What's it for?

2. What is the purpose of the O ring (part 15 on the workshop manual diagram) that goes on to the shaft and which appears to fit somewhere between the two seals? I can't work out what it presses on or seals.

3. The main shaft has a small groove in it, about where the water seal bears upon it. However, the workshop manual diagram appears to show no such groove. I suspect it is some form of wear but, to my mind at least, there's room for doubt as it appears deeper and sharper than I would expect wear from a lip seal would produce in normal use. (Before dismantling the pump, the old water seal appeared to be leaking but now shows no obious sign of anything other than normal wear. Should a groove of some sort be there in the shaft or should the shaft be smooth? If the latter, what might have caused the seemingly extreme wear?

Thanks, in advance, for any info.

If you look at a parts diagram, there's a spacer sleeve shown between the two bearings.

The O-ring between the seals is intended to be a "slinger", I think.

The shaft should be perfectly smooth where the seals bear on it. Wear can be caused by small grit particles in the seawater.

Thanks pvb, for the info - much appreciated. I suspect you are right about the O ring and you have also confirmed my thoughts about the shaft.

You mention the spacer that appears on the parts diagram between the two bearings. However, the spacer I'm referring to sits between the two fluid seals (one for water and one for oil), presumably to maintain a fixed distance between the water and oil seals, perhaps just to ensure the "slinger" does its job. I'll put it back anyway - even though it isn't on the diagram.

Thanks again, for the response.

Hi !

I've rebuilt two of these pumps recently.
The plastic spacer was fitted on only one of these and I've read that it is obsolete.
Same for the slinger which i reinstalled nevertheless...
The metallic spacer between the two bearings is mandatory to save the correct distance of both and to make it easier to correct their position on the shaft if moved too far in one direction.
Reminder: Never (in letters NEVER) move the bearings with force applied to the outer ring (if pressed on the shaft, if pressed into the housing apply force to the outer ring only)! Except if the bearing is to be discarded ...
Pushing the shaft with the bearings mounted into the pumphousing by hand is no problem.

If the "groove" on the shaft is way more than visible I'd recommend fixing the problem with SKF's SpeedySleeves!

Thanks Frank (Seamechanic). Looks like you are right about it being obsolete. Since posting earlier I've found the spacer/washer on the parts diagram for the water pump fitted to one of the VP2003's predecessors, the MD3B. I'll put it back anyway - it's not doing any harm. As for the shaft, I think I'll just get a new one but thanks for the "SKF SpeedySleeves" tip.
