VP2003 new noise

Pushing her along a bit, when a sudden alarming noise. First thought, exhaust hose adrift, quick check ok, no visible leak around injectors, head gasket look ok. Limped home ok, engine revs and all, but the noise. Any suggestions?

My VP2002 makes a very different noise when the cooling water stops flowing, always due to inlet getting blocked for me. (direct cooled) As per Coopec, above, check that first

If it’s just a change in note one to check for as well as the norm,.
when on mine it started to sound a bit barky, no over heating just a bit Steam at higher revs, it turned out it was actually the raw water pump seal.
the water strainer was mounted at top of cylinder head height, I think it was the head of water it was pulling pushed the seal over the edge, high outlet as well.
didn’t leak water for quite a while hence looking in wrong places (strainer seal, sail drive leg inlet blocked)
after trying different things, renewed seals (easy job on 2003 series) and problem solved .

Check all engine mounts are intact and not broken or loose.
Esp under higher power is there any increase in vibration?

Is this mainly heard from the cockpit or when you stick your head in the engine compartment. If the later then aproblem should be obvious such as leaking gasket or injector pocket and if only heard from the cockpit then probably a lack of cooling water and if obviously not this then a cylinder valve problem if accompanied with a good flow of water.

If the motor appears to be running OK and its power is more or less as expected, it might also be worth checking that the air cleaner hasn't come off / is loose / broken. Admittedly it's something of a long shot but, if you haven't checked it already, it's easy and quick to do. On my 2003, leaving the air cleaner off adds quite a bit of sound to the general engine noise - or did before I improved the sound proofing of the engine box.

If it was an injector sleeve it would be a spitting/chuffing noise and on the 2003 would be very easy to identify.

Wild guess, but it might be a leaking exhaust manifold gasket. Check your nuts are tight, and then check the ones next to the manifold are tight. DO NOT REMOVE YOUR HEAD!

PS: WTF is a PS 2002 when it's afloat ??

Resolved. Took head off, and here was a part of the VP air filter (that I had thrown away 2 mth ago due to rust) that had jammed under the valve
