I would like to fit oil temperature & pressure gauges to an VP MD2020.

Pressure - I have located the oil pressure sensor (1) that must currently operate the control panel warning light. There are already 2 wires attached, is fitting a pressure gauge as simple as wring to this sensor?

Temperature - I think I need to fit a sensor and gauge. There is a blanking plate on the side of the engine (2) is that where a sensor needs to be fitted?

Thanks, Gary.

PS. The bracket that I wrote the (2) on, any idea what that is for?

Oil temperature gauges aren't very common, do you really need one?

The bracket is where the throttle and stop cables are mounted.

Hi pvb, definitely not essential, but I have a matching pair of gauges, so I'd like to use it if I can, but it is way down a long list.

Arghh, something else I have forgotten to plan for, need to see what bits I need for that.

Surprised by your desire to fit an oil temperature gauge but the deluxe instrument panel has oil pressure and coolant temperature gauges together with a voltmeter.

Additional sensors are required for the coolant temperature and oil pressure gauges. I believe there is a location for the temperature gauge sensor but the oil pressure gauge sender may require an adapter kit.

Note that some versions ( early ones??) of the MD2020 have an isolated DC negative system . If your oil pressure switch is a two wire device , as opposed to simply having two wires connected to the same terminal, suggests that your engine is one with an insulated negative. If this is the case be sure to preserve the situation

The parts list at http://www.marinepartseurope.com/uk/en/volvo-penta-schematics-MarineDieselEngines.aspx should identify gauges, sensors and other poarts you need.

As said the bracket is for the engine control cables. The parts lists show all the necessary bits and pieces.

I have no idea how you would go about fitting an oil temperature gauge. A coolant temperature gauge would be a far more sensible accessory anyway.

Oil pressure and temp gauge project has been scrapped.

I'll fit just the coolant temp gauge.

Thanks for all the advise.

Mine is MD2020B, unsure of the exact age. The oil pressure sensor has 2 wires connected to the same terminal (I think):

Nothing out of the ordinary here?

The MD2B that I removed had 2 negative wires attached to the engine, I was going to re-attach them to the MD2020B, unsure where yet. Presume that is OK?

The two holes on the bracket are for the clamp on the Morse cable to operate the throttle. Standard fittings using a saddle clamp and two screws into a plate behind the bracket. You will have a similar bracket for the gear control cable.
