VP KAD series turbo's, how do I know if they've failed?

I'd strongly, strongly, strongly suggest that you do not try to measure the axial and/or radial bearing clearance of a turbo. They generally have fully floating journal bearings; shaft to inside bearing and housing to outside bearing rotate within the circulating oil. There is no metal to metal contact during their high speed rotation.

Very difficult to measure correctly. DTI down the oil drain, hold compressor and turbine at the same time and measure while moving in the same plane (do not rock from side to side). Very highly likely to cause damage in the process! Best to assume that it's working just fine.

Personally and IMHO, I'd put the turbo bottom of a very long list of checks if you have concern over engine power output.
