VP gearbox spline (again)

I thought the well known mod was a hex

There are two modifications. Volvo Penta have a cushioned drive plate, which requires no changes to the gearbox. Another company offers a modification which involves machining the gearbox shaft to form a hex, which needs the gearbox stripping down first. The VP mod is easy and works.

The vp mod is easy and it works except if the splines are badly worn.

Any info on the VP cushioned drive plate? Agents did not know of it. Meanwhile, box off, spline out. Now the female spline, remove the flywheel case, remove the coupling. Question; is the coupling also holding the flywheel on? Will the flywheel drop off ?Hope not

8 bolts hold the flange on with the female splines. Bolted directly through the flange into the end of the crankshaft. The flywheel Sits appropriately 7mm onto the crankshaft so it will sit there after you remove the flange but probably safer just to lift it off to prevent it falling.

I had the DB Marine conversion which is still going strong. It doesn't require the gearbox to be stripped down. You just have to remove a few bolts and the end plate containing the input shaft comes off. The whole unit is then sent away. Here's my worn splines. I noticed them whilst renewing the saildrive seal.

There are (were) 2 separate mods the VP one which involves replacing the input gear and the DB marine one which machined a hex on the input gear

The VP modification doesn't involve replacing the input gear - it only replaces the output plate on the flywheel with one which has rubber cushions.

So how does the drive work with a worn spline

If the splines are very worn, you wouldn't use the VP kit. For splines which are starting to show signs of wear, the kit is fine and will help to minimise further wear. I'd say the splines in the photo in post 27 would be OK with the VP kit.

Sorry I would not refit it

Well I went ahead and did it.(Versatile never sent a quote) And the VP one is a myth. Cost equiv 150quid for machining and welding and 1 impact socket. I stripped and installed. Very pleased. Cant see any negative to it.
