Our engine hours meter has been temperamental for several years, but recently stopped working altogether. I've cleaned the terminals and much to my surprise it did work again, but I don't think it's long for this world.
I've seen the recommendations for various Curtis Meters. I don't feel confident to fit one into the existing tachometer, but have plenty of space on the binnacle to fit a stand alone Meter.

1. Are they waterproof?
2. In very simple terms how is it best to wire. ie- which wires from where so that an idiot can understand?

Thanks,
John.

When mine failed - as they usually do - I fitted a separate hour meter in the engine compartment. Easier to read than lying on the cockpit floor and no weatherproofing problems. Wired to the alternator D+/61 terminal so only runs when engine is running and alternator generating.

I managed to find a Engine Hour Meter which you bolt to the engine and it runs off the engine vibration.
Plentiful in the 1970's and early 1980's but it appears that nobody makes them anymore.
ASAP were listing them.
Preferable to something else which needs wiring up

As the author of the document explaining how to do this, I realise it may be a bit tricky for some. By coincidence I have a tachometer with one fitted that I don't need. I would willingly swap the transparent interior parts for you, if you pay for the meter and the P&P.

When mine failed on a Moody I found Nigel's article, it was quite easy to change and I found the instructions easy to follow, when I sold the boat it was working fine and the boat looked original
