This pic shows the heat exchanger of a D6/370hp engine (in an IPS 500 installation, though I don't think this makes any difference).
The boat is 8 years old, and clocked about 600 hours.
What do the VP experts of the panel think, is this normal/to be expected? TIA!

I am sure Volvopaul will confirm, but he did our engine survey (D6 also) in December 2016 and picked up early signs of scaled up heat exchangers. 2010 boat. He said it is a "regular" issue a that arises on D6 engines at around 6 years old.

When we had our engines serviced in June this year the VP dealer spotted further deterioration of the issues, and recommended a descale which based on Volvopauls recommendation I had budgeted for anyway.

When they took them off they said they "weren't so bad, but it was good preventative work"

I can't see pics on ipad but android phone is fine...

Updated to iOS 12 last week in France .
Works fine on my I pad .

Back on topic I think it’s down to the install more specifically if the HE ,s self drain dry after shutdown .
Factors like relative height above the WL and the type of seawater flow be it through legs or strainers ,position of the vanes in the ( stopped moving impeller) and such like .
The one in the pic sits pickling it’s obvious where the line of drainage is , the level it drops .

Interestingly ours drain down completely so basically with regular use never require a de scale .
The HE,s are as said above the strainers , above the WL ( top side of a straight 6 ) The strainer lids are a few cm above the WL , you can hear them trickle down after switch off .
Has a guy remove one last year to replace a leaky exhaust intermediate plate ,so could inspect the stack .
He told me they had never been off .MAN tech btw .
Temps never alter 85 summer , now 84 as it’s the back end of the season .

It would seem on this forum a predominately VP issue ,bunged HE.s , materials used or lack of self drain ? Who knows ? View attachment 73409
Poor pic this was last year from a 2004 engine first time off ,Med use quite salty .

I,am planning a biggie overhaul at 1000 hrs currently on 870

MapisM,

I don’t know how you post your pictures, but I can never see them. I’m using an iPad on iOS 12.
Sorry about that. I'm using imgbox as Bigplumbs said, but I don't think that's the real culprit per se.
I just opened this webpage with swmbo's iPhone which is also running iOS 12, and the image shows nicely...

PS: maybe you could try clicking on this link, which is just the direct URL of the pic on imgbox website, and check if you can see it...

Weird, maybe the incompatibility is rather with iPads, than the iOS or the website as such.
I don't have any iOS 12 iPad handy, but I just opened this webpage on an old iPad with iOS 9.3.5, and it works just fine.
Maybe it's yet another planned obsolescence functionality which the Cupertino boys thought to include in their latest iPads... :ambivalence:

Absolutely normal, actually pretty good for 8 yrs. Nearly all coolers show a tide mark where they drain down, Rydlyme will clear it out, just remember to fit new anodes after any descaling treatment as they dissolve quickly in the chemical.

Another new boat?
LOL, naah, that's a pic from the boat of a friend of mine.
You should know by now that IPS is for me in the same "OMDB" category, together with the AnCam and a few other things... :D
Btw, this poor chap recently had also to replace one IPS ECU (3k or so), because out of the blue it plainly stopped working... :ambivalence:

The power of google has solved the problem. My internet is provided by Vodafone and they have an issue with imgur, to solve this I can either change the DNS on my router or use a VPN. VPN it is.
