I know that somewhere in one of the manuals I have read the recommended starter battery size, but can't find it for looking.
I have a D4 210 HP, and the current battery is 100AH 740 cca and dying fast (it's at least 5 years old).
My problem is space - otherwise I'd stick in a 105 AH 900+ cca. Saving a few squid is not as important as reliable starting.

The space I have is a limiting factor - 30 cm x 17cm wide and 20 ish high. Most of the chunkier batteries I see are 35cm long. I have thought about an Optima yellow top 75 AH which has 975 CCA.

Any comments or recommendations?
Thanks

For a starter battery a higher Cold Cranking Ams rating is more important than the AH capacity, and assuming the case size is similar you are trading off the AH for the higher CCA. I would go with it, but won't be very effective as a domestic / general service battery for your other services.

I have 2 x 75 AH service batteries, so should be OK on that front.

Thanks for the reply :)

You need to meet the required capacity in the manual, it is in there because I've seen it, no good guessing otherwise damage could be done.

The manual says "2 connected parellelly 12V, max 88Ah".
I'm not sure why Volvo would specify a maximum capacity (to prevent the alternator from overwork on a recharge?).

Easy enough to find!

Its in the "Technical data" section at the back of the manual, under the heading "Electrical system"

2 x 88Ah 800cca

As a note on the side, the demand on starting batteries are high for a few seconds only (when engine in good condition).

This allows the battery capacity to stay near 100% at all times and since the true killer is repeated deep discharges, a well charged battery on a willing engine should easily keep for 5 years. One of my two is the one fitted by the manufacturer (in 2004!), still proving strong in all battery tests.

The other was replaced this winter. Since not having owned the boat for more than a few years I do not know for sure how batteries has been serviced, but I can see from the papers that the charger has been replaced. A faulty charger might well explain why a battery has gone toast.

Behind the scenes there are only a few owners behind battery manufacturers left in this world, so I'd suggest looking for properties rather than brands when selecting a new. If nothing else, warranty and weight are properties connected to value for money :)
I ended up with a VARTA (one of the brands owned by Johnson Controls) this winter.

Did anyone ever get to the bottom of this? For a Volvo D4-300...

I have read conflicting things in the manuals:
One says: “Starter motor battery capacity 2x Ah 800 CCA" ? Does that mean it needs 2x 800 CCA = 1,600 CCA?
Another says “D4 (One battery / engine) Lowest temp: +5°C (41°F): 750CCA and 75Ah / Lowest temp: -5°C (23°F): 800CCA and 75Ah”

I have heard from some that 1x Group 31 per engine should be fine and others say need 2x batteries.

I am looking to understand the CCA/MCA, aH, etc that is recommended. I have a few options:
1x AGM Group 31 20aH rating = 105, 800CCA at 0 degrees, 1,000 MCA at 32 degrees
OR
1x AGM Group 34 20aH rating = 55, 775CCA, 890 MCA
OR
2x AGM Group 34 20aH rating = 55, 775CCA, 890 MCA

Thanks!

My SC35 has two 105Ah Group 27 batteries for each engine - four batteries in total.
Going with the minimum possible spec might not be a good idea on a cold morning.

My boat has a single 800cca battery for starting the d4 260, and another battery for running the boat services, I think they are both 110 ah in size
