Here's the complete narrative on my VP D4-300 No Turbo Pressure problem - really quite strange. Photos of oil drip noted in the attached PDF file. Appreciate all that have responded thus far...seeking last minute insights for my own edification..and yes, I have now turned all over to my marine service team (Prince William Marine, Woodbridge, VA).
Have D4-300’s powering our 2019 Beneteau Swift 44 - direct drive; 216 hrs (70 of which have been logged since April 2021). All filters, fluids were changed out prior to putting into service for the 2021 season. Last weekend I was idling out through our No Wake Zone (Occoquan Creek tributary leading to the Potomac River) - about a 20 minute transit at 5kts. When I attempted to get on step the port engine would not accelerate beyond 2200rpm and Turbo Boost Pressure registered only about 5 psi. I throttled back to 1500rpm, checked EVC engine management system which read all systems normal e.g., no warning and no alarms. Attempted to accelerate again - this time could only get up to 1900rpm with boost pressure reading 1 psi….then it fell to zero…still no alarms. Went through diagnostics and recommendations including changing both fuel filters and the boost pressure sensor. Took it out for a sea trial; no joy. Went into the engine room to check air filter and air intake and noted oil dripping from what appears to be the air side of the turbo-charger…see photos.
Beasterdamasthe mechanic came into the engine room, he removed the exhaust elbow and he used a cloth, a blade and wd40. I had similar symptoms but no oil.
Good to know - thank you. Continued reading and checking things out. Due to oil showing up on the air side there’s an unbalanced pressure situation causing oil to blow through the seal on the turbine/air side of the rotor shaft. This, apparently, can be caused by a number of things including restricted air intake due to dirty air filters…….or……crankcase over pressure…..caused by worn piston rings. Going to test crank case pressure and check air-filters. Will let you know how it goes.
Sooooooo.....disassembled the air intake and exhaust from the turbo charger.....air side compressor blades looked ok with slight oil......turbo side blades......trashed (see photo). 226 total hours....(70 since I purchased). Had the engines surveyed prior to purchase.....all solid from compression to oil samples..... . Off to call VP for a replacement.....
