VP D3 service - warranty - Insurance question

I would be asking why the camshaft broke as its a part that doesnt do work that can relate to a sudden stop of rotation

the camshaft was not broken but bent, but why is indeed a good question,

all this is over 3k though so probably not worth the effort.

this was my conclusion a few day's ago, and decided to accept things and close this case.
And I will sleep silent, :)
thanks for taking time to read and posting !

The belt is hand tight without the tensioner, the tensioner is for taking up the slack above 2000 rpm

Even with 3 pots it would start if the belt settled back down to rest in the right place, there is no reason to assume it didnt.

all interesting info to know.

its a shame we cant get hold of the engine or at least photos of the cam, big / little ends and above all a photo of the tensioner bolt.

if we really want, we can, the engine and parts are still at volvo.

I've seen the broken bolt, it had a clean and fresh breack surface, no other damage nor indications.
If I remember well it was only 5mm diameter (approx)

Usual way an engine heat seize is due to expansion , the piston will get tighter and tighter in the cylinder as it is squeezed
then the engine stops.
Trying to start the engine again while one cylinder is squeezed, put a very strong force on the timing belt, so that this bolt breacks (in stead of the belt teeth)
thats exactly what I think that has happened.

the inspector didn't notice any "heat" damage on none of the cylinders, but when I read his report very carefully, I can't believe that his inspection was very thorrow.
"didn't have the impression that...etc etc"

I think we are wrong here,
just found this drawing
it is bolt part nr 13 that broke, the engine can't run without this tensioner roller part nr 12
but perhaps it could run without the "idler" roller part nr 11 (but that one was OK on my engine)

Happy end after all

Just to announce that I am really satisfied with both the insurer and Volvo,

the insurer payed me partially for the repair, despite the fact that they are still chasing Volvo for waranty.

today I've got confirmation that
Volvo will pay to me, the remaining parts (fuel injectors) that the insurer didn't want to pay, as according the expertise it was not necessary to change these.
I didn't threat them, I politely asked, and then it was the good work of the local Volvo dealer. ! (Volvo Marine - Kant Antwerpen)

perhaps I'am the only one on here that is satisfied with my insurere and with Volvo Penta Waranty :)
