Was cleaning a friends boat today and noticed that the outer seals look knackered. Some of the rubber seal came apart, however there isin't any oil leaking out and the reservoir looks clean.

Should I leave well enough alone, or change them? If the latter, any online guides?

The outer seals are designed to scrape the rams as they retract. If they are knackered the hydraulic seals are one level of protection down. The next seal is the main hydraulic seal and you don't want to lose that. I would suggest it's a job that while not immediate, should be done at the earliest opportunity. I'll send you a pm regarding a guide.

Many thanks, will await PM!

Yes you're right, after a bit of Googling it's the piston scrapers that are gone.

We're on fresh water so don't have to worry as much about little buggers growing on the rams.
