Hi,

Just been informed by the engineer who carried out my service that my VP DP leg is a 290 mod and not as I thought a 280!

This came about when I asked how the (unreliable) reverse lock mech was looking during the service on the leg? he informed me that this mech is not on the 290 version.("which you have").

Hence just wondering if any other differences known?

Oh and as an aside....I'm very very p***ed off today, boat (FL Sprint new to me) was supposed to be collected from Plymouth a.m. tomo in readiness for launch in Wales on Sunday...but that went t*ts up this morning when our lorry driver put his back out which will see him out of action for at least a week.....

Oh well pub it is then! ;-)

Just about everything on it is different ...... 290 was improvement in every way on 270/short lived 280 and even worse 280T with hydraulic rams.

AFAIR
290 SP leg had the horrid reverse latch, but the 290DP leg has hydraulic lock (at least my DP-E ones do)

PS have you tried Acrossland for transport.... based Swansea and hes a good guy, moved 2 of mine very carefully and reasonable price..07836 728709

Thanks for the heads up on the transport, my transport is much cheaper though ;-) (works lorry) so I'll just have to be patient ;-)

Have the boat launched in Plymouth and spend the weekend onboard!, weathers not going to be great but it's a long weekend all the same.

If it's in a boatyard (QAB?) they will launch and berth it for you, then recover to transport when it becomes available.

I would want to be onboard for the weekend & Im sure you do too plus there's plenty of bars and stuff around the Barbican to keep you amused over the BH weekend.

Great idea...but the thought of M4/M5 on a bank hol weekend just gives me the shudders! Plan B to be executed.......PUB to drown em!

If you can find the oudrive manual on line, (used to be an easy free down load but cant find it at the moment) then there is a drive ID chart at the front. Even with that though I could only reduce mine to one of a couple of variants as some of the changes are internal so cant be seen.
PM if you want me to send a copy.

Thanks, will contact when I need it....but all crossed that it won't be soon! :-)

I've got a 280-C with hydraulic rams. Not fitted yet so what can I expect to drop off immediately I go afloat?

Both my Princess 25 and Princess 33 had the Volvo 280 with hydraulic rams to lift/trim the outdrive.
Apart from the normal outdrive maladies....steering shaft seals, prop shaft seals/gear shift seals/U/J seals/transom seals/bearings,leaking rubber ware and other minor stuff, the rams made excellent anodes and corroded away at a rate of knots leaving a nice oil sheen everytime you used them.

Have a nice secondhand set in a deep dark high security bank vault awaiting a lucky new owner, who needs first to phone Vilevo to find out cost of a new set.:).

VP drives can be a nightmare to identify as each time they upgrade the drive they also follow up the spares with upgrades
Though you may have started with for example AD40/280 you may actually have been upgraded and require parts for a DPE drive.
Ie if you have a 280 and want a new top unit they will supply the latest version that wil fit or can be fitted with additional parts
So the 280 with the 290 top does not look like the 280 but the shield intermediate and lower unit would look like the 280.
I am confused even trying to write this so trying to work out what parts you require can be dificult.
If you are dealer with hard copy parts books you can usually trace the upgrades but using the electronic system it tends to jump straight to the latest numbers which is difficult if you re trying to see the minor parts.
Best place to start is with the engine number VP should be able to see what it was coupled to when registered.

Oh heck. You are the bearer of bad news.

My P286 has 290 SPs.

Is this why they need a big tug to get into reverse?

Is it some sort of cable operated latch?

On my unit there was a cable/spring operated latch which locked the system when you selected reverse.Mine failed when the little securing springs fell off.You could buy a repair kit for around £120.00 + VAT (most of the bits you will not need)
Worked out @ £25.00 per weeny stainless spring about 30 mm long.
The locking system was designed to to allow the mechanism to release outdrive if you hit something hard in the water when going forward at speed..

Uh oh! sorry to have mentioned it.
yes, its a spring operated latch that is a right pain as any encrustation etc prevents the latch from engaging with the result that when you engage reverse, the prop and lower gearcase make strenuous efforts to jump out of the water and end up next to you.

I have a funny feeling that i may have a spare set of springs/latches in my shed... i'll have a looksee.

Because you tend to avoid anti -fouling the latch mechanism,to try and not clog it up with paint and stop it working, the barncules head straight for it and achieve with their many little dwellings exactly what your are trying to prevent happening.
