The pump on my engine has started to dribble. Does anyone know if a repair eg a new seal is possible or if the only option is an exchange unit? I'm just asking on the off chance because these are horrifically expensive....

I don't know if keypart do a shaft kit for that model of pump but that might be a cheaper option!

Replacing seals is usually only a short term repair as if the seals have failed the bearings will have been subjected to running in seawater!
In some cases the drive shaft will also have a groove in it where the seals have been running and new seals will only work for a short time before seawater starts penetrating them again.

I would give key part a call to see if they offer a shaft kit.

I am talking about the freshwater circulation pump.

Very many thanks for the parts4engines link. If this is the correct part (and it looks like it is) its a tiny fraction of what I've been quoted!

A new replacement unit is £280 from Keypart, but you can get the seals or a shaft repair kit to rebuild it yourself. Straightforward job, but a bit of a pig to remove the pump as one of the nuts is rather inaccessible.

Ok one is second hand and painted in expensive green paint.

Has anybody tried to reference VP pump part numbers against Perkins part numbers as this would be a significant resource for PBowners

As noted above, the pump is a Volvo marinisation part, made by Johnson or Jabsco, depending on model.

I think you are talking about the seawater pump as far as I can see the circulation pump is not marinised!(except it has been painted with Volvo green paint!)

The OP was referring to the seawater pump. The freshwater circulation pump does not normally require replacement, and not sure that it is even the same unit as specified on a Perkins engine used in non marine applications.

Most of the parts on a Perkins/Volvo engine that fail or require regular replacement are the marinisation parts and are available as pattern parts from cheaper suppliers (filters,belts, pump impellers, indeed the pump itself). Rarely are core engine parts needed as in normal use the engines will last 30+ years and failures usually lead to a write off.

I was hoping someone would be able to confirm to the OP and myself if the Perkins pump was indeed the same as a VP pump as posted in the links? They certainly look similar!

Most peeps are fully aware that the add ons to convert for marine use were either Jabsco or Johnson!

Mea culpa. Missed that. However see that the Keyparts offering is a pattern pump and comes with the warning that there is a variety of pumps fitted to the engine. So suspect that any attempt to get a direct comparison with Perkins part numbers would be difficult for the reasons stated in my last post - there are many different applications for the base engines.
 
Thanks again for all the help. I'm concerned that these pumps don't normally require replacement. On my engine there is substantial corrosion on the pump cover and this extends under the pulley. The freshwater level in the heat exchanger also tends to drop more than it used to, so my reasoning is that the seal at the end of the pump shaft is failing (probably only when hot) and spraying out a fine dribble of coolant.

The replacement Perkins part certainly looks right from the picture and it's a fraction of the price of a VP unit from a main supplier so I am tempted to give it a go. My worry is that the VP ones are marinised in some way (other than the green paint!) and I might get into bigger trouble if I fit one that isn't. On the other hand, since the pump is only handling a mix of fresh water and antifreeze, I can't see the need...

Can anyone fault my thinking?
