With the asistance of valuable advice from this forum I have now managed to fire up my VP 2001 following a diy de-coke + overhauled injector and injector pump + (this weekend) a new lift pump. Once started (bit of a struggle) she appears to rev ok and run evenly at slightly fast tickover and above. However she will not idle - just starts to hunt and then gives up. If it were a petrol engine you would suspect a blocked slow running jet. I have put everything back as was and not made any adjustments to original settings. Any suggestions please?

when you refitted the fuel pump did you engaged it properly in the control rod. This rod is easily bent. You can check it by removing the plug at the end and then you can see the rod and operate it manually to see if its free

I did take care - but have not checked as you suggest. I did note that the 'pin' needed to be in about mid travel position to drop into the slot in the rod which struck me as a bit odd (rather than one or other end of the rotation) but purely from a position of ignorance. I will now remove plug and check engaged.

I don't claim any expert knowledge (for example I wouldn't attempt a DIY overhaul) but last year when my 2002 displayed the same symptoms it then started to "die" once put under load. I eventually traced the problem to an air leak in the fuel line due to a cracked copper(?) washer on a bleed screw. Replaced the washer and the problem went away, but that may be entirely coincidental.
