Volvo with no revs in gear, plenty of ooomph when just revving?

Volvo TMD 31 just started after a year. No probs so far. Wetted the Volvo drip seal, all good. Went to put in gear and idles fine but won’t Rev in gear? Loads of black smoke as if it’s trying……what’s stuck do you think?

Oooh could be. First time here in a year! Although the hull isn’t too bad but good idea.

Try spinning properly shaft by hand ,in neutral. See how much resistance

Maybe l will run it in gear at tick over ish and let it all fly off…….we’ll see.

And l have a Bruntons auto prop so it could be fouled up. Does go fwd and back though in tickover.

A friend had the same problem last year on a smaller Volvo Penta engine. It turned out to be carbon blockage in the exhaust manifold mixer. Removed, cleaned out and good to go.

Sounds very plausible, and would explain the black smoke. Just running it for a bit at tick over to see if it improves.

Yup, it will do, problem is when under load

Have you tried checking the air inlet/filter? Black smoke indicates a lack of air.

I was also wondering if some one had stuck a rag in the inlet. If so it is well and truly sucked in to the filter by now.

Diver down. Muscles and other crustaceans all over the prop! Amazing the difference now.

Coral worm fouling? Particularly bad in parts of Chichester Marina. Cant stop it coming up twice.... both or nothing.
