Volvo vs Yanmar vs Beta

We had a new Volvo fitted to our boat. It came with a three-year warranty, provided that all the servicing was done by Volvo approved 'engineers'. At the first service (on a Saturday)the 'engineer' tightened the cylinder head bolts to more than twice the recommended torque, commented that there was a lot of bedding-down, then snapped one bolt. "Sorry, sir, there are no replacement bolts in this country, we'll have to get another set from Sweden. Next Wednesday be OK?" At the end of the three years we totted up; the cost of servicing had been greater than the original cost of the engine.

Now we have a Yanmar. We still have a three-year warranty, but simple servicing like oil and filter changes we can do ourselves. What's more, the service intervals are longer. Volvos? Never again.

Snap 581hrs for the Volvo engine to fail, 15month old and they did not want to know.

Further problems with gearbox and saildrive seals. Sold boat and in selecting new boat would not consider those that were Volvo only engined. Its sad when your choice of boat is determined by must not have any Volvo bits!!

Sold boat and new owner continued to have trouble until he replaced the lot with a Yanmar saildrive. Very good boat now and has been trouble free since then!

A clever man learns from others experiences!!

I hope that this new information technology age will drive crap suppliers/manufacturers out of business!

Many thanks to all who contributed. I've passed on your thots and experiences to the guy who is at present painting his bilges.....

He can now do what owners do over winter......wait till Spring before asking the yard to re-engine in the week before launch!!
