Volvo V8\'s

Is it correct that Volvo made 5.0 V8 and 5.7 V8 engines? and then were replaced by the mercruiser range if so what power output were they? And how reliable are they? And also any other interesting information reguarding them

Volvo AQ240A (Is that the 5.0 V8 or 5.7 V8)?

Many thanks

Re: Volvo V8\'s

Both Volvo and Mercruiser produce nearly identical 5.0 and 5.7 V8's based on GM blocks. There are slight differences in the way they are marinised, and in their EFI settings.

Re: Volvo V8\'s

Some were also based on Ford blocks.

As a guide 5.0litre (300 cubic inch) 200hp with two barrel carb, 225hp with four barrel carb.

5.7 litre (350 ci) 260hp with two barrel carb, 290hp with four barrel carb.

I suspect that the AQ240a may predate the ratings above and be a 5.7 litre.
However, could also be a recent high rated EFI 4.3litre V6.

What year is it?

Live and learn, eh? We had a GM based Mercruiser 5.7 that was a carb (don't know which) and rated at 250hp, FWIW.

Re: Volvo V8\'s

as it's a Bayliner, I'd have thought a Mercruiser was most likely. The 5.0 litre will be anywhere from about 200hp to 250 (not that age though, 250 would be EFi), and the 5.7 from 220 to 270 or so, as stated earlier. Can't comment on the Ford lumps, but I understand the GM blocks to pretty unburstable. I think the wise ones find the equivalent car parts when looking for spares...

Re: Volvo V8\'s

Ford engines have the distributor at the front of the engines, Chevy (GM) at the rear. 5.0ltr & 5.7ltr Chevy are externally the same. 5.7ltr has 4"cylinder bores. 5.0 has (from memory) 3&3/4"

Bayliner in mid / late '80's used OMC setups based on Ford blocks. Is it original?

If it's definately Chev, let me knowbthe casting number near the distributor and I'll try and identify it for you.

Good point about OMC, Col, I'd forgotten them. Are they any good, or are spares a pain for the legs?
