Our new "to us" boat has a 80HP Volvo TMD22. AFAIK, this engine is a relabelled Perkins. Does anyone know which Perkins it is?

The question arises from having sourced Volvo labelled spares at prices which take your breath away, .....I would like to investigate the Perkins equivalent.

Collateral question: who is best UK based supplier?

TA as always.

Thanks Nigel. Been denied access; apparently I am a Spammer.... NOT.

You have the 55HP unit in your boat? Isn't it a bit short on power? My ex Bav had the 78 HP TMD 22 and it was ideal esp in heavy head seas.

I have an MD 22 (non turbo), and it is certainly a Perkins Prima.
You need to find out what Massey Ferguson Tractor had your engine fitted in as you could then order parts.
Also ordering parts for Tractor Engines is easier than ordering parts for cars/vans/trucks as they don't ask for registration numbers, just models. ie MF35. MF 165 etc.
You would also find that there are hundreds of mobile mechanics who have years of experience in going out and working on broken down tractors (with Perkins engines) located in awkward places, ie Farms etc.
In fact although my engine is a BMC 2.5 Diesel they fitted them in both Tractors (Nuffield) and JCB's and after I bought my boat I had a Mobile Tractor Mechanic out to do a compression test. Which at £25 (no VAT) was cheaper than getting a boatyard to do it.

There are 3 Volvo units based on the Prima.

MD22 is the non-turbo version and is 55hp
TMD22 is turbo but without aftercooler, and is 78hp
TAMD22 is turbo with aftercooler, and is 105hp

These engines were used in BL Maestro, Montego, and Sherpa Vans.

It's also the Perkins M50.

I get all my spares (gaskets, fuel and water pumps, etc) from motor factors at about 1/3 to 1/4 of VP prices.

And get a Haynes workshop manual (Perkins Prima). Much better than anything VP produce.

Hello Bobc,

Brilliant idea regarding the Haynes workshop manual.

Jim@Sea: equally superb idea. I will investigate.

Thanks all.

No experience yet, But I will be buying some gaskets off them next week for a 4-108

Just noticed that there is a thread further down about spares

I had a look at the link and see that they offer injector nozzels. I have wondered about replacing my injectors but didn’t realise that I could 'just’ “ with a 22mmspanner and a vice” replace the nozzles.

Is this as easy as it sounds? it would seem worthwhile, at that price having a set in my spares box?

Thought you would have to set the crack pressure, so would need a test rig.
Most Haynes manuals tell you to get it professionally done;
BTW, also had the Haynes manual for the Prima, very good.

The engine in question has nothing to do with tractor engines. It is, as has already been noted from the British Leyland Montego/Maestro/Sherpa van. Based on the BL petrol engine, redesigned by Perkins as a diesel and marinised by Volvo.

The tmd22 is the turbo version of the base engine fitted to maestro, montego and daf leyland vans. I sourced the cam belt kit, the fresh water pump. I posted a few weeks ago the part sources. The lift pump is on ebay regularly, the starter motor is different from the vehicule, its on the opp side, the gaskets are the same, cheap on enay for a maestro or montego

Not difficul to do BUT you need a pump and guage to set them afterwards
See here for part numbers http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?407519-Volvo-Penta-MD22-Cambelt-kit&highlight=md22
