Anyone out there have any experience running a boat fitted with Volvo TAMD74P-EDC's made in 2000? After reading various posts on Volvos in general (expensive parts, iffy reliability, etc) I would like to get some comments from owners with first hand experience of this particular unit...the good the bad and the ugly. (I am on the cusp of buying a boat with a pair of them fitted w/660 hours). Any comments most appreciated.
P.S. Does anyone know of a link to a forum that discusses the pros and cons of the various engines (Cats, Cummins, Detroits, Man, Volvo, etc)?

We've had the predecessor, 73P's, for the last 3 years, and the only problem was self inflicted. I think they're pretty rock solid engines, and not too smokey.

Thanks for the link. But it's a commercial forum (i.e. you have to pay to use it). Glad we don't have to pay for this excellent one.

mine are 2001 74P's with EDC. No problems and they perform beautifully. 33knots flat out on a 13 ton boat.

There were some recall mods to the engines which need to be checked to see if carried out. One was preventing vibration with the shut off relay (2004 i think) and I understand there were some firmware changes since 2000.

My only complaint with these engines is that the water pump impellor is on the starboard side (rather than the front) of the block and makes changing the one on the starboard engine a complete pig (the gap between it and the fuel tank is about 4 inches and you can't even see the pump)! The port engine is a doddle so i suppose one out of two is something. They are more economical tha my previosu engines (71B's) and they smoke far less due to the EDC control.
