Volvo TAMD73P EDC

I am thinking about buying a boat with these engines. I have a preference for CATs, but these particular engines are almost spotless and the whole boat is in very nice condition.

Year 1998, hours 600.

Any comments or advice would be welcome. Is there anything I should watch out for?

Always check the service history. 600 hours is good as these engines need working and regularly.

Also make sure it is truly an EDC and not EC. Sometimes these are confused.

You can tell very easily. If there is a control panel with a central selector and either side D (diagnostics) and N (Neutral) it will be EDC.

EC will just have a white selector button or similar.

With EDC you can read out the diagnostics but most important over 1,000 rpm it syncs the engines.

In my experience CATS are noisier and smokier than Volvo although I am particularly referring to the D series

I have these engines and on the plus side they are quiet, don't smoke much, and push my 15 tonne 46 footer to 30 knots which i think is pretty good. The EDC is superb and I've not had any problems in my 250 hrs cruising (they already had 250 when we bought the boat).

I blew a cylinder last year but that was down to a blocked raw water strainer, but I was dissapointed that the EDC monitored the rising temperature but did not shut down the engine, and the alarm was too late.

I have heard isolated examples of problems with the engines, so it will be worth a bit more investigation, but I would happily buy them again.

These are definitely EDC. I have had smaller Volvos before with EDC. I have also previously owned the same model of boat with CAT 3208s.

The advantages of the Volvo appear to be that they are lighter and smaller, I can get around the engine room easier and things like injectors are easier to get at.

The same boat with CATs was a bit stern heavy, but it's a lower stressed engine and, IMHO, it is better built.

It's just that, whilst this boat is lacking some options that I would really like, I am taken with its condition. It was surveyed last year with no engine problems found.

Houghn, do you have any info on those "isolated problems? Also, I can't afford it, so please don't give me too many excuses not to buy it!

I have 72 EDC 's I have spent a fortune so far on a fault on one engine which the Volvo guys can't find, have lost 250 rpm have checked fuel, replaced inj, gaskets spent 2500 on manpower 3000 on parts still can't get to bottom of the problem.
The engine controls on one side packed up no upper control 1300 to replace.

If I were you get cables??

Had picked up the following thread from a different forum when searching about my engines, unfortunately there is no conclusion so in some ways it raises more questions than it answers. Having said that you would think if the engines were prone to major problems then more people would have responded.

Also the guy opposite me in the marina in Lymington had a problem with his 73P's, but not sure what it was and what caused it. You could pm Col, as he worked on them.

I would repeat that my experience in 250 hrs with a boat now 8 years old, other than a self imposed problem, is that they are smooth, reliable and powerful engines

I am considering buying a Carver 450 two engines Volvo Penta TAMD 73P EDC . the engines are 1999 and have 700H

could you tell me if there are problems with these engines and what is the consumption curve
