Just been looking at a boat for a friend.

One engine while perfect at tick over, produces lots of black smoke at 1500rpm, opening up, it takes a while to get to 2000, but, when the revs increase above 1500, the smoke stops.

This to me sounds like a turbo problem, but any thoughts from the collective wisdom here ?

I have a new boat coming with TAMD74p's and both smoke a bit just before the turbo kicks in. Mind the props were completely shot, in fact one fell off of it's own accord it was so bad. I'm thinking a damn good service and new props will help :). VP of this forum agrees so maybe look at those two area's?

Mightt be worth changing the air filters or cleaning them, as they can limit air flow under load causing the engine to run rich with the resultant black smoke.

Where is the boat based. It's not uncommon wirh med boats to find condensation in the pipe between the inlet manifold and the boost sensor in the ecu. This causes lack of power and smoking. The early 74's had a steel sensor with a hole that would block up with rust which also needs cleaning (later ones had a brass sensor).

Thanks Guys,

once at 2000 it goes ok, just takes a while for the revs to increase, yes it has waste gates, one area to check.

The boost sensor is another to look at.

Many thanks.
