Advice needed, My engine oil cooler is leaking sea water from the bottom of the tube stack. It has slightly corroded the housing, do the tube stack seals at either end retain the oil around tubestack?. There is no cross contamination of oil/sea water and no visible oil leakage. I understand how these coolers dismantle but do you forumites think i will end up with new assembly due to corrosion, the cooler has been overhauled in the past or do i strip down, clean ect and just replace the stack assembly and all seals but unfortunately the housing is not available separately. As the oil cooler is over £1000.00 any advice greatly recieved. Thanks

Hi you can try and strip it down but they are usually that badly corroded that the 4 bolts on the end plate shear off, you have to press out the tube stack, due to the alloy housing being old and corroded it swells up on to the brass housing, you cant see much on the intake or outlet sides, you may be able to acid dip it or chemically clean it, motortech marine sell a solution for unblocking tube stacks, not seen it in action myself though.

Would get the oil pressure side pressure tested before you strip it as the oil side is greater pressure than the water side, it may all be in vane and you will have to buy a new cooler.

The oil cooler heat displacement capacity is only just big enough for the six cylinder engine when all the tubes are flowing through, as soon as the stack gets blocked the oil overheats causing piston and crank failure.

I would also look at the valves in the lower housing, these maintain piston cooling pressure and crankshaft oil pressure, they do get pitted and dont maintain the correct pressure.

Thanks Volvopaul, so i think its bite the bullet time as its been stripped before about 4 ish years ago with previous owner. Are Volvo the only option for supply/cost?. With regard to valves in the lower housing are they the ones oval'ish plate on each side and what usually do you have to replace?, have included link to show oil filter housing. Thanks for your advice
