Hi
I’ve been following this forum for a while but this is my first post, and I was hoping for some advice from some Volvo or Perkins experts.
Is the block and cylinder head castings on the 105hp Volvo TAMD22 the same as the Perkins Prima M80T as fitted to Montegos, Maestros and Sherpas?
I have a Volvo TAMD22P-B which has suffered fairly catastrophic failure; dropped rod resulting in a holed block, damaged crankshaft journals, snapped camshaft and damaged camshaft bearing surfaces in the head. Replacement Volvo parts are not viable due to the cost so I was hoping I could salvage a Perkins Prima M80T long block from a Montego, Maestro or Sherpa.
I made the assumption that the Volvo TMD22 and Perkins Prima M80T have the same long block as they are both 80hp? Going through the Volvo parts catalogue the TAMD22 and TMD22 long blocks seem to share all components except the:
• pistons
• piston rings
• camshaft
• cylinder head??? - I can’t find part numbers for the cylinder head casting as they are discontinued. The part numbers for reconditioned heads are different but that may just be due to the different camshaft fitted rather than the casting?
My Plan was to try and get a Prima engine out of a Montego etc, retain the block, crank, con rods, head, valve gear and fit new pistons, rings and camshaft for a Volvo TAMD22. This would cost hundreds rather than thousands!
Does anyone know if this is possible, or have any other suggestions?
Many thanks in advance.
