In my current Bav - with me for 22 yrs since new - I've migrated from recommended to mineral oil suitable for a diesel, all synthetic, an d now back to Volvo's own.Thank you.

I'm conscious of advancing running hours - now about 3,300 - and the need to keep the motor in good condition. So engine service every year ( 2 yrs recommended in the manual I see) renewed filters all round and oil of course. When I sailed a Fulmar with a Bukh engine I was persuaded that a mineral oil would bind up with any water ingress and be immediately visible, so an effective warning before trouble set in. Synthetic doesn't do this. I applied this to the Bav, but there's never been water infiltration, as happened on the Bukh, so I went over to synthetic. Latterly I've reverted to Volvo as its price became more reasonable.
Perhaps this sample of one indicates the sensitivity of engines to different lubrication regimes is not as critical as might appear. Annual renewal of the oil and filters could be the lesson in my case.
Interestingly, the manual says whip out the injectors every 3 years or so. Every engineer I've dealt with has said leave well alone. I have, and now 22 years later the same unserviced injectors work just fine - to judge by the exhaust. Perhaps it shows that manuals can't cover all types of usage and loading.
