Hello to you all,
I have a marine projects 31, fitted with a pair of volvo 3.0gl and volvo sx sterndrives.
The engines and drives were fitted in 2006 and I have only have been able to clock up 60hrs in that time.
I have been advised that the sterndrive driveshaft bellows wil need replacing as they are now three years old, something that the manuel does state, but being new to boating i am completely green in this field.
Can anyone advise me if the bellow change on these drives is quite straight forward? I am reasonably competent being an ex engineer for JCB, but I am aware that marine engineering is a totally different ball game!
I have looked over the net and can gather the bellow kits can be obtained with a gasket kit for each drive although oe equipment seems really expensive....the big dilema is o.e versus aftermarket??
If it is not advisable to do this job ones self, can anyone who has paid for such a job to be done give me a rough guide as to how much this will cost?
I know this seems a bit of a vague thread, but any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks
Danny

HI I was once in the same game as you but did my apprenticeship on Massey Ferguson diggers and excavators.

Yes your right the marine industry is very different, no big hammers or oxyacetylene torches anymore!

Seriously if you still have your tools then changing the bellows and servicing the drives wont be too far out of reach.

Remove the drives, gear cable and the nuts, drain the oil etc.

You are then left with the swivel housing without the drive, its a bit fiddly bit like the mercruiser and yamaha drives, you can then get at the bellows, flexi screwdriver with 7mm socket helps for undoing the clips, pretty straightforward.

Dont mess with the trim switches unless you have to.. buy genuine parts the aftermarket ones dont always fit, the boot rubber is a poor quality in some cases and wont stretch over properly in some cases, I hate non genuine parts.

Thank you for the responses, you guys have been extremely helpful.
I am definately going to give it a go using genuine parts..
As always I have another question...
Someone has since informaed me that if I remove the drives, I will need to recheck the alignment of the engine and driveshaft?
I have been told this is done by a sort of alignment tool, and checks alignment of the rubber doughnut??
Im sorry for being kind of vague again, but as never carrying out this job before, I dont want to make a hash up of it!!

Many Thanks
Danny
