Please can someone advise me to the fitting for pressure and vacuum testing a 1989 Volvo SP 290 outdrive? I am thinking of using a Mityvac auto pressure/vacuum tester. I need the thread size of the dip stick and drain plug so that I can make up a relatively economical tester.

Buy a Quicksilver plunger pump and use the tube and fitting which is the correct thread.
There are two types one for the 1ltr bottles of gear oil with a plastic fitting, or the workshop size which we use on the 5 ltr containers which has an aluminium fitting, the threads are the same as the drain plug on a Volvo drive.
These are sold by Mercury/Mercruiser dealers.

I have a Mityvac and used the pipe and screw fitting off a sterndrive gear lube hand filler pump, the ones that screw in to the top of the gear lube bottles and then screw in to the lower drain hole of the drive.. worked a treat for pressure tests but the mityvac wasn't man enough for the vacuum tests (too many pumps of the handle needed).
