Can anyone please advise me as to how much grease, and what type, I need to use on my Volvo shaft seal which I believe is a type H245.
Instructions say use appropriate grease and correct amount,
which is not very helpful!

Thanks in anticipation.

I posted this almost a year ago, but have pulled it up as I also need the info now.

From the Volvo (Sweden) site - it is known as......

Rubber packing box
42.36742.367

Moulded packing box for effective lubrication/sealing. Simple, time saving installation and compact size. Minimal maintenance work – grease every 200 hours or once a year. The packing box is specifically dimensioned for Volvo Penta propeller shafts and sleeves. For effective lubrication it is essential that the packing box bearings are water-lubricated at all speeds. Supplied complete with installation tools and grease tube.

Pos no. Part no. Shaft mm A mm B mm Ext. dia. shaft sleeve mm 1)
42.367 828527 40 36 82 60
42.367 828526 35 36 82 54
42.367 828422 30 36 72 48

On your way to this page, there is reference to the correct grease - that was how I was able to find the seal in the first place!

Not easy to find,

"The grease is solid and water-resistant, for use in rubber packing boxes and for the teeth and shafts of folding propellers.

Viscosity: NLGI 2

Pos no. Part no. Quantity Pack
18.17 828250 27 g Tube"

From the assembly instruction sheet (send me a PM with your email address if you want a pdf copy of it) "Press approx 1 cu cm of waterproof grease into the rubber seal. Use the greasing pad (as small plastic pouch like you get sauce in at motorway service stations)supplied.

The seal should be greased after every 200 hours operation or once a year. Press in approximately 1 cu cm at each lubrication."

All very well me saying all this, but they appear to have changed the site!! It is all there but takes a bit of searching to find things. Not the easiest site to navigate.

On my previous boat, I used Molyslip grease when I had none of the VP stuff. I'll be using it again this year on my present boat.

I've used Blakes seacock grease for the last 17 years. Just changed the Volvo shaft seal (after 21 years - no leaks at all) as part of a refit, so the stuff works for me!!

Get a poly bag (or bank bag)cut off the corner about 1/2 cm each side , put in about a cubic cm of correct grease.see previous post for correct grease.squeeze the seal both sides with first finger and thumb, this raises seal from shaft, push bag in where the gap is as far as you can, about an inch ,work in grease, pull it back about 1/2inch and squeeze rest in, try and save a bit for last 1/4 inch , rotate shaft to spread, assuming boat out of water.Inside seal are 3 lip seals so you are lubricating them.A lip seal is like your mouth gripping the shaft and stopping water getting past.

Not being picky, but there are only TWO lip seals!!

Don't want to worry the chap!!

Tee Hee!! No, only two. The aft one is water cooled/lubricated (hence the need for 'burping') the second, forward one, is grease lubricated.

Just fitted one and there are definitely only two (as on the one I removed) unless of course, they've added another one in the last 4 years which is when I bought the one I've just fitted!!
