Volvo Shaft Seal

I agree with others about lip type seals not being a risk and they do not need changing if vessel is in clean waters and maintained well until drips occur when running.
They will drip when running long before they leak with the shaft stationary.
I changed my 21year old one last year and the old one's lips were well worn but it still never leaked when shaft stationary, it only dripped when running.
As an expriment I tried a gently tightened jubilee clip put around the rubber on the mooring at half revs just before I lifted her out to change the seal and the drips stopped so this would be a get you home job if the rate of ingress turned into something more worrying midchannel.
Face seals can wear very rapidly if the water is gritty and I have known faces on pumps crack in two. You certainly are faced with a lot of water then if your ship has 70 foot draught and its the main engine cooling or aux salt water cooling pump.
If I was going long term live aboard in far flung places I would have stuffing boxes as I was brought up with them including how to use jumpers rag etc when you did not have any new packing material.
