Volvo Seal greasing made easy!!

Or you could try the method below. It has been posted before but is the easiest I have found.

Take a tube of the Volvo grease and unfold the flat end. Leave the cap on.

Fold the flat end round the prop shaft taking care the corners are not sticking up.

Squeeze the Volvo seal, just as if you were going to burp it, to lift the rubber from the shaft then gently push the flattened end of the grease tube under the rubber.

Grip the tube and prop shaft in one hand then squeeze the tube against the shaft. The grease is forced into the seal. Use half a tube.

Withdraw the tube, wipe away any surplus grease, and it is job done.

The seal rubber is sufficiently robust that it is not damaged. If you look at a new one out of the box you will see the sealing lips are very substantial.

The whole job only takes a couple of minutes.

Don't forget to burp the seal when the boat is relaunched. It is a good idea to burp it again after running on the engine for twenty or thirty minutes, more air is released.

I used to try and grease a Volvo tube ~ it was never that successful. Then I inherited a club boat with a Volvo seal. The boat is used for approx. 16 hours/w/end over 30 w/ends.
What do I do now?

Answer ~ bu**er all ~ I launch it and drive it with no probs? I don't even try and "squeeze" the tube to let the air out ~ I just drive it!!!

I'm not saying that this is right or wrong, only that this is what I've done over the last 10+ years and the seal is still good!

Peter.
