Hi
I want to restore the moody 30 I have just bought to perfect condition. It has a Volvo sail-drive and i want to replace the sail-drive gaiter rubber and the gaiter. Has anyone else done this and if so did you have to remove the whole engine? I've been quoted about £1200

Is this the best time to change the rope cutter bearings at £60 or should i just buy a new rope-cutter?

I had problems with the stripper bearings
the manufacturer told me that my stripper was worn & their bearings would no longer fir
i was quoted £ 498-00 for a new stripper
It sounded like a bloke in a living room making up prices as he went as he later revised cost to £ 450-00

I solved the problem by buying a sheet of Tufnol ( black bearing grade for water lubrication)for £28-00 & turned up new bearings & have enough for a few years
A local machine shop with a decent lathe (mine is a knackered old Drummond) would do it in less than an hour
When i finally buy a new lathe I could do them easily

Re the gaiter- i had to slide the engine on my Hanse forward 3 inches
Not worth paying £ 1200-00
It took me a couple of weekends as i just took my time . my son had to lift the unit out for me. But i paid about £ 350-00 for the parts
Plus I now know a bit more about the boat. I could now do the job in 8-10 hours easily
there are lots of online posts from owners associations on how to do it plus a PBO article

How many years since it was last replaced. ? From memory the usual replacement cycle is 8 years. are there any signs of cracking or deterioration in the rubber ?

You should be able to do a search, I've posted on this on several occasions having done a couple on different boats. Incidentally, I changed mine at 18years and the one I took of was as good at the new one. If the ring which holds the gaiter in place is rusted you will need to replace it, this failing is a greater risk than the rubber gaiter splitting.

I've also done it twice on my own. There are several articles in the yachting press on how to do it. The Keypart supplied seal is cheaper than one from a Volvo agent and it does come with full instructions.
