I think the title says it all!

Does anybody know, or know where I can find out, the tightening torque for the 8mm bolts for a Volvo 130 saildrive bearing housing?

Many Thanks

Rick

From my own notes:

Torques saildrive

Prop shaft housing
Black silicone sealant (Permatex 81173) on mating surface (not really needed with 2 o-rings - never saw any sign of water ingress)
Loctite on bolts (allen), then 30 Nm

Drain plug, soak fibre washer in oil for 15 minutes before installing. 10 Nm

Anode bolts (flat blade) 12 Nm

Propeller cone 70 Nm - grease splines first
Cone lock bolt 20 Nm - with Loctite on threads

I do all that except the Permatex and never had any problems in 5 years. Just did a belated spring haulout and after 2.5 years in the water everything came apart easily and nothing had leaked or moved that shouldn't. It's for a 120S-E, but the torques for the 130 are unlikely to differ.

Prop cone torque I do with a luggage scale and calculator as it's a bit difficult to find a torque wrench fitting for it :)

In this diagram I am talking about part number 18. It's a 8mm stainless bolt going into aluminium and I have seen 12 ft lbs suggested in a torque table, which equates to about 16 Nm, rather less than suggested by Yngmar if we are talking about the same bolt. I am simply replacing the top bolt as the latest drives have a hexagonal head which means you cannot fit a "Stripper". I have been sent a bolt with an Alan Key head by Ambassador Marine.

The 130 Saildrive workshop manual says 28Nm for the propellor bearing housing bolts.

If you want a copy and can't find it easily online, send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you a PDF.

I've also never used a torque wrench with these bolts, Vic. In fact, I don't even have a torque wrench on the boat. ;)

Non me I can't remember last time I used one , using one to torque head bolts one thing but most other stuff , I guess some may use it to do up there wheel nuts , but then again I don't have wheels .

Thanks pvb. I have found a workshop manual on line and 28 Nm it is, which is pretty much what Yngmar suggested. I am afraid I would not trust myself to get it right!

Happy to help! Of course, others would say that I'm a useless sufferer of Dunning-Kruger syndrome, and that I'm really incompetent. Thankfully, they're the really dumb ones! They'll never ever receive the thanks I get, as most of their posts are argumentative and offensive. Still, I soldier on... ;)

VicS seems to think that I suffer from that, whatever it is. Will paracetamol help, do you think?

Well, it's something which our Aussie friend coopec keeps accusing me of having! Frankly, I think he's been out in the sun too long; after all, spending 20 years fitting out a hull in your garden must be a strain on your mental acuity. Especially as it's still nowhere near finished!

I wouldn't worry too much about what VicS thinks about you, he's only another poster on an internet forum. Just keep taking the paracetamol!
