This was posted on any thread but I never got any reply , having it own thread hopefully this time it will .
I have a Volvo with and S130 gear box with a two blade folding propeller , Volvo says it need to be put into rev gear once the engine is switched off .
Here the problem . once the engine is switched off at which time we are normally sailing and making way , the propeller is still turning and no matter how slow to put in rev gear it makes a loud clunk as the gears are locked , this is a bit worrying and although we not had any problems I wonder in time if some damage will be done to the gear box .
One through I have had is to turn the engine off in gear then at which time the prop would stop turning and then put it in rev . to me this sound a better way of doing it and i canr see if any damage would be done by doing it this way ,
what is the panel thought ? Do you have a S130 ? how do you do it ?
I have Email three Volvo dealers and they were as helpful as normally , two didn’t reply and the one that did just sent me a copy of the manual and refir me to the page that says , to put it in rev .
So over to you guys .

With a folding propeller there is no need to leave it in gear when sailing. Just let the engine drop to tickover in forward then switch off. The propeller blades will fold under water pressure. Put the lever in neutral and the shaft will not turn as the blades are folded. When you restart the engine the blades will open as soon as you put it into gear.

The reason you get conflicting or no advice is that Volvo have been inconsistent over the years on the subject - even illogical by recommending on some drives putting into reverse for folding props when it is not necessary and leaving in neutral for fixed pops which leads to constant noise when sailing!

I have a 130S with Gori 2 bladed folding prop. If I do as you describe, the blades will not always fold and the noise of the gears turning can be heard. This is only stopped by putting the lever to reverse. When the engine is switched off and then put into neutral, there will not always be sufficient water speed to close the blades. It may also be that different prop designs react differently.

VP are quite adamant that reverse should be selected when sailing if a folding prop is fitted

See the last paragraph of the service bulletin in the second link in this post. http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthrea...-Volvo-D1-20&p=4939259&highlight=#post4939259

You are correct their Manuel do state to put it in gear , and if you don't in our case any way you can hear the gearbox working most of the time , by the way the blades are free and nothing is obstructing them for. Closing .
So going back to the question , do you think it would be better to turn the engine off in gear , then put it in rev once it stopped ?

My Flexofold always seems to fold (130 drive) using the method I described and I never hear the gears turning. For years I had a fixed prop (on a 120) I always put it into reverse after the engine stopped to eliminate the noise - against the recommendation. Although the drive failed after 3500 hours it was the clutch, having suffered from years of charterers whacking it in and out of gear to avoid hitting walls, not the gears that failed. You can either turn it off in gear or put it in gear when the engine has stopped. Apart from being able to hear it engage because there is no engine noise to drown it, don't see that it makes much difference.

I have a 130S with a 2 blade Flexofold.
I stop the engine in neutral then put into reverse otherwise the prop continues to turn. I have not noticed a clunk.
The gearbox should not clunk as gears are not engaging; it's a stack of clutch plates that self tighten under load with a ramp mechanism.
(It should not be left in forward, the clutch plates will then only have the slight preload that initiates the self tightening action and can slip and wear if the prop hasn't folded.)

It's never left in forward gear , it always goes in rev , but I just wondered if we stopped the engine while in forward , then the gear wouldn't be moving in which case we it goes in rev the clunk wouldn't happen , was talking to two others with same gear box ,, they also have the same problem .
