Hi
My boat was fitted with a new Volvo 4.3 + sterndrive last year [ under insurance, thank goodness !! ] but ancilliaries such as throttle / linkages are the originals [about 8 years old].
Last summer at river speeds everything was great, but just moved to the coast and after a blast round the Solent last weekend the gear selection into reverse has tightened up to the point where it has to banged in to gear - not good in the marina as the huge burst of throttle that goes with doing this
a] makes the boat leap backwards
b] makes me look a right ....

The selection into reverse was never great with the original engine, but this is probably worse.
Does anyone know if this is just a case of adjusting / lubricating linkages, or should i be looking for something more? All [clean] comments gratefully received !

Replace the cable into the sterndrive. The last few feet of cable is always under water and can't be lubricated. I've just rep[laced both of my (9 yr old ) cables on my Sealine, and the difference is very noticeable. NB You will have to have the boat lifted to access the final links. I used Ultrafex cables - much cheaper than Volvos (naturally)

I had the same problem, rather than replace the cables I decided to lubricate. The problems associated with this have been covered, however, I decided to force a light oil down the cable to see if it would improve. I disconnected the cables from the control end, used small bore tubing over it (secured with small jubilee) and at the other end of the tubing I attached a large syringe (again secured using jubilee).
I filled the syringe with Duck oil and slowly applied pressure and managed to feed it through the cable.
Some effort involved, but it worked!

Stick a new cable on it. Fit a Morse one. Well worth it.

Thanks everyone for the info - spent a couple of hours on Sunday lubricating the linkages [ got a sunburnt neck in the process ] and that's made some difference. Probably gonna try Mark's suggestion and see if that works, before investing in a new cable. Thanks again....
