The gearbox label on my volvo D255F states "SAE 15W40 ONLY". Are there specific Transmission oils to 15W40 or can I use my Engine oil of the same grade?

Why is it reverse gear oil rather than gear oil?

Do you have separare reverse and forward gearboxes?

Genuine question.

Richard

Historic terminology. When gearboxes with reverse gears first came in they were referred to as "Reverse Gear" to indicate they had that feature. Clearly obsolete now, but such terms tend to hang around long after they had any practical relevance.

sorry, no, the gearbox is just the reverse option. As opposed to saildrive and others.
I worded that poorly.

Volvo call them reverse gears when describing gearboxes for shaft drives. as opposed to sail drives

in the case in point all the alternative transmissions, reverse gear boxes and sail drives, use 15W 40 oil except the HS25A reverse gear which uses ATF

So thats interesting. It is a HS25LA. Attached picture indicates the gearbox type and the separate oil label.

Perhaps its been changed from ATF to 15W40 just as they changed the oils in the saildrives that used ATF to engine oil

Stick to what the label says, not the manual which is what i was quoting from.

Even though saildrives also have a reverse gear? Very strange. You can tell I'm a Yanmar man. :)

"Yanman" perhaps!

Richard

Often happens when words are used as "labels" and the meaning departs from that in everyday use, or even from the dictionary definition!
