I know it is a fact that the digital hour readouts fail after a while, BUT has anyone found a lasting cure, other than buying new ones?

All 4 of mine have failed / become intermittent, and yes, I have tried the long over winter trick of placing them in an airing cupboard. This works for a short time only.

Can they be taken apart and successfully repaired, just like you can do with other lcd display contact strips?

As a matter of interest, all 4 gauges have never got wet. Surely a marine grade component shouldn't fail if kept dry?

Interested in the replies. One of my displays has just failed. In the Med, not cold, not wet!!
Not sure whats behind the display, but is it separate from the bit that remembers the hours?

Yes, the hours are logged in the engine itself, all the Rev Counter/Display unit does is display the hours

Thanks alt. Where does the engine store the engine hours?. I have KAD43's so no black box (other than the compressor speed sensor)....as far as I know!

Hours are stored in the rev counters, I have programmed loads of new/secondhand ones to match up with bust ones, yes the hours are stored in the ECU somtimes as well but if you fitted a new one they display 0 not whats "Logged in the engine"

Mike, is this a service that you offer? If so an avitar link to your business would be within the custom and practice of this forum.

Mine went on my Yanmars tooo and I knew they would go again and again....so I replaced them with mechanical hour meters and just us the others for RPM.

I stand corrected

Hi they can be sent back to vdo repair centre, last time they were near Birmingham.

Yes the airing cupboard does work , the hours on an edc engine can be read using the volvo penta diagnostic key or vodia tool so theres no getting away with trying to falsify the hours if a survey is carried out by me.

Try dealers for the purchase of 4 for a discount.

Personally vdo do a nice rev counter thats nearly the same without the hour meter, I would buy 2 separate stand alone meters and wire them into the ignition live wire.
