So now I am getting used to the wonderful world of marine Diesels

Our new boat has a volvo MD2010

I have had the pump taken off and inspected because of a slight weep. Most of the parts are ok apart from the drive shaft which has worn on the seal contact patch.

Checked on prices and availability online for a spare pump.

Jabsco £231.60 out of stock

Volvo which I believe is a Jabsco and not even painted green £349.20. from keyparts online check stock status

Phone keyparts and they have an unlisted service kit (pn 21951416) including shaft , bearings spacer, seals and circlips clips for £61.60 3 days delivery....

Should I order a spare pump?

Is this the weak link on an MD2010?

I've just had the shaft, bearings and seals replaced on the pump of my 2003 with a kit from Keyparts. I don't know if they've ever been changed before but I wouldn't be surprised if they were the originals from 1990. I don't expect to have to change them again and didn't even consider buying a spare pump. No reason why the pump on MD2010 should be a weak link, it doesn't work any differently than on any other engine.

Had similar drippy leak on 2003. Saw the prices and decided to try it.

Went for the kit and did it myself - so far so good.

That was 2009. Not tempting providence by saying anything, but no water appears in the bilges from that area.

Hi Steve,
I'm not convinced that Jabsco and Volvo raw water pumps have interchangeable spares. IIRC, I once bought a Jabsco impellor for my MD2030, it was identical except for the bore which was very slightly different. Volvo likes to keep its components uniquely Volvo so we poor punters don't have a choice.

I hence don't know if the drive shaft fitment features between the two are the same or different (I suspect the latter). Worth checking before buying?

Hi Steve. I have an MD 2010. Needed a new pump, looked at all the options to save some cash, including a Jabsco, though Volspec while admitting that they were similar couldn't confirm that it would fit. A friend with the same engine had bitten the bullet and got an engineer to replace his while up on the East Coast, and told me that he had had to modify it to fit. I bought the kit from Volspec and got a local guy to replace the shaft and seals. The hardest bit on my boat was getting the pump off, as one bolt is from the front, the other from the rear and he had to use a cut down spanner. I have since been told that a flexi drive would have made the job a lot simpler. I have an old freshwater pump with some life in it if you ever need one, I replaced mine in haste.
