Re: Mars arising.

Haven't had my 'scope out yet, but the red planet is very clear here and high in the sky after 10.00pm. Unfortunately, in the evening it's over the city lights, but in the early a.m. it's over the Gulf, so I might make the effort one morning and plod over to the beach and set up my telescope. Night of 26/27 Aug it's closest, I believe, not that a few days either side will make any difference to viewing.

Re: Mars arising.

I'm quite a keen astronomer (or was - the boat seems to occupy most of my time now). It's when you get these good planetery viewing opportunities that I get all interested again and start to wish I didn't have my old dobsonian light bucket and had one of those smart computer driven scopes. I've seen some amazing imaging
with simple web cams and some fancy integration software found free on the web.

Wish I had more time to play with this type of stuff!

Re: Mars arising.

Has this thread drifted ?

I thought we were going to get a "you know who" knocking session.

Re: Mars arising.

Some very good photos in Sky n Telescope showing the earth and moon from the vicinity of Mars.My little observatory has been in the making for 18 months.Have finally found way to make dome rotate(armstrong drive) using some chair castors.
May get one of them nifty eyepiece CCD thingies soon.
Had a look at the cluster in Perseus last night via a new wide field eyepiece.Pretty impressive.
Oooo and a transit of Venus next year.Bliss

OK so who here agrees that the prices are far too inflated, I need a quick straw pole on this, as I'm prepared to pen a letter to Volvo UK to see what response I get.

Let me know

Peter

Me for one.I mean 67 quid a gallon.Whats in it.Platinum?

And what are you going to say in your letter?

" Dear Mr Volvo
I was daft enough to pay the Volvo price for the oil that you buy in bulk from a distributor of one of the big oil companies. To save me from doing it next time........"

They're merely charging what they can get away with. Nothing to do with cost - simply what the market will bear. So buy somewhere else.

Dear Mr Cynical, if you are happy to pay 70 quid a gallon for oil then do so, but there needs to be more done for the ordinary boating public, we have been experiencing too higher prices goods and poor services for too long.

So without an eco terrorist head on, more pressure will be put on them to lower prices, this will not happen overnight. But if some mariners can start to charge for lift outs at 30 - 50 quid instead of 5 pounds per foot, where my little boat cost 126 quid a lift out then the same to put back in , then there is a win win opportunity on offer. The marina gets more crane work and the public boater gets a fair price for the service he gets and uses it more often.

If the boating public unite under a formal association or organisation then more can be done, in a credible and balanced way.

I am merely offering people the opportunity to speak with a unified voice.

I’ll put you down as a NO - quite happy to pay rip off prices rather than complain and say it’s not acceptable.

At the end of the day the choice is yours.

Regards

Peter,

You can add me to your lkist of very disatisfied customers.. I have had to pay over £500.00 (heavily discounted) for a manifold that should have been max £200.00. The gaugae that tells you the drive angle at over £300.00. The pump for lifting the outdrive at over £1,000.00 which a very similar to the one at my local high pressure hose company which sells for less than £200.00 and a water pump that Volvo charge over £300.00 for which I have been offered the same one from a dealer who buys them directly from the manufacturer at £170.00.

Needless to say except for the manifold I have bought second hand from places such as Boat Jumbles but I would like to buy new if the price was ok. The real joke is my engine a Volvo 151A is only a series 2 car engine. I wouldn't mind quite so much if the items were special but in the case of the gauge it was not even made to withstand damp let alone marinised. In my mind we are all being taken for suckers and here is one who buys non Volvo bits where I can and saves a great deal of money. Maybe we should start a list of non Volvo items that are compatable.

Thanks for the info, I'll copy this thread over to Boatone as the list would be better compiled under the Volpen user group I think.

Cheers Peter

The VolPen Users group website carries specific sections for each type of Volvo engine, outdrive etc. Whilst not a database as such, it is possible to search the site for any keyword so each section is effectively a searchable archive for any particular unit which has been addessed by members of Volpen with service info, parts alternatives sources etc etc. eg it is a growing depository for useful info.
Anyone with an engine not currently listed can submit a brief starter paragraph and a new section will be added for that engine.
The VolPen site is not a 'lets have a go at VP' forum but is intended to let VP users share information and advice. Over 350 users are now registered worldwide.
Take a look, join, and add your engine to the list......... Website, Photo Gallery, Chat Room, Burgees

Last week I needed to replace the 2 remote oil filter hoses, both 600mm long. Volvo wanted near £300 the pair, so I had them made whilst I waited at Pirtec hoses for £40 the pair! This example makes a mockery of Volvos usual excuse of 'we make so few of these parts, that's why they are so expensive'.

However, Volvo can charge what they like - buy or not buy is the consumers choice. The best option is to let boaters know that there are alternatives and probably the best way to find out is to speak to a good marine engineer.
