Gents,

I've now almost completed a marinisation of a Perkins 104-02 (nee Volvo 2010) but I can't figure out if I need to worry about the diesel run off (return) from the two injectors. There's an 8mm supply from the pump to the two injectors and a single (connected) 6mm supply which takes - I think - any 'unused' fuel and puts it back in the system.

Q - does this have to be connected? My old Volvo MD1 didn't have one. Can I blank it off? If not, where should it be connected back to (tank, input side of filter?).

Any comments appreciated, as usual.

Dave

You probably won't have an injector pump if you block it off!

If I remembe well,my old MD1B had a return to the fuel filter. This isn´t a good system since the fuel gets progressively hotter as it serves to cool the injection pump and the injectors. Much better to return the excess fuel to the tank where it mixes with cold fuel

Route the return into the top of the tank so that it mixes with the fuel already in there.

It will be clean as it has already passed through the filter(s).

Definitely go back to the tank, I have the Perkins Perama 3 cyl which is the same family of engines and it definitely goes back to the top of the tank, but I'm not sure if this pipe goes to the bottom of the tank so it doesn't cause any foaming or just drops into the remaining fuel in the tank.

I also think it will be essential. With my Perkins 4-108, typically 50% of the fuel is returned. When the fuel return was accidentally cut off once, the engine kept going but I had all sorts of problems with leaks around the injectors and banjo connections.
