Any issues with reliability with the 2007 petrol Volvo Penta 5ltr engines and drives?
What fuel consumption can I expect with petrol on a 25' Regal cruiser, river & sea use?

The engine reliability should be more like a modern electronic diesel engine!
The engine is without turbo intercooler, have low speed and power compared to volume 54hp/l The elektronics is maybe less complicated than a modern diesel! (This has MPI el ign system ,knock sensors)
Freshwater cooling is an option!

The fuel consumption is approx 0.30-0.32l/hph. that means that on

VOT 270hp*0.31= 84l/h

90% speed and 2.5curve =63l/h

80% speed and 2.5curve =48l/h

70% speed and 2.5curve =35l/h

If you know the top speed you can calculate your spesific consumption!

To put to simply, its a GM block same as Mercruiser use of which there are more examples in use than any other engine in the world.
Its solid reliable lump with no known problems, these were ironed out 30 yrs ago!
The Mpi system is reliable but requires good filtration which should be standard anyway on a Regal. The main thing is the manifolds, if they are seawater cooled they will need replacing at sometime, the elbows possibly sooner, people say 5 yrs max but I have known them to go for much longer it depends on useage, if its on a river it will slow down the corrosion a little. If its freshwater cooled the block will be fine but the manifolds could still be seawater cooled as there are to versions of fw cooling, but the elbows will always be seawater cooled.
The drive will be OK, VP's drives are very reliable, but can get water in if they encounter seagrass or fishing line as it gets under the shaft seals, this just means a flush and new seals and oil, I done over a hundred of these repairs and they survive OK.
The fuel consumption is relative, it should do about 8-9 gallons per hour at 3500rpm which is the optimum for most petrol engines, at fuel throttle it will use around 13-14 gph.
On the river it will be below planing speed so will be about 2.5 gph at 1000rpm.
Make sure its been serviced and the bellows have been changed in the last 2 years or they are due now.
