I have a Volvo Penta branded Tachometer, made by VDO Technik AG Switzerland. The part number is N 02 070 109.

The engine hours display is not working, so I had a probe around and found +12V on the + pin. However, I also discovered a extra pin, not shown in the Volvo diagram outside the main block of 4. This also has +12V.

Does anyone have more info on this manufacturer, or for this or similar tachometers?

I understand that the pin outside the main block is to enable power to 'reset' the needle to zero when you turn of the engine. If you want some info on replacing the LCD hrs display PM me with your email address.

This may be the common Volvo problem of moisture in the Tacho. The display disappears but the counter keeps counting. One fine day the display will come back and the engine hrs will be correct, then it will go away again for no apparent reason.
Some take the tacho or the whole engine control panel and put it in their drying cupboard at home but frankly this is not often a longterm solution.
Me, I bought a 12V driven mechanical hour meter (with rotating cylinders like an old speedo) and installed it on the Ignition +12V line of the engine.
It is a minor irritant to add the original hrs up to the install date of the new meter when doing my log but I have the benefit of the meter being closer to the nav table as I installed it in the engine compartment.

Just a HU to say that I followed Richard's instructions, and the replacement LCD is working perfectly.

Does anyone know the pin-out of the 6-way ribbon cable on the original LCD?

After a prolonged lay-up I had to vent my Volvo Penta MD17C engine.
Now I notice that the VDO rev counter doesn't function.
The 2 prong connection from the sensor (Part Number 1502028) on the engine block is seemingly ok.
Can anybody tell me where and how to start looking for the fault without messing things up?
Many thanks and best greetings from the South of France.

Thanks,Nigel,Richard, and Ray for your exchanges.I ve got the same issue and your comments helped a lot. I dismounted the tachimeter, smoothly dried it with an hairdresser fan, pluged an unpluged the connector to improve contacts connevtion (after 8 years of installation) Repare the wedge lamp 1,2 volts; And everything work perfectly.I can see the Digits again on the LCD, and as you mentioned the system kept the time with engine on.So Thanks very much for the added values brougt by you all. Dear Richard - could you please send me details on fixing my hour meter on my tachometer on a Volvo MD22L. many thanks Nigel

Not sure what you mean. The +12V and 0V are the red and black wires shown in the photos, these connect to the respective ignition and ground wires on the back of the tachometer.

I mean the wiring for the LCD replacement as illustrated in the PDF link.
The document provides instructions to replace the faulty LCD (which is only a display) but does not provide sufficient details to wire the new LCD inside the tachometer.
I realized that perhaps you are not the author of the document.

I am the author of the document, but the original version of the instructions came from the credited source.

As to not having sufficient detail to wire the new LCD, see my answer above regarding the red and black wires.

I suspect he thinks one has to wire the display to the original electronics, not realising the new unit is self contained and works just by being powered up.

Hi Nigel,

I've tried to source the curtis LCD for the hours meter with no success. Could you please tell me where you obtained the part.

A very useful post many thanks.
