Volvo Penta TAMD40B altenator problem

My Volvo Penta TAMD40B alternator doesn't seem to be charging and we think this is due to the unit in the picture with the 4 led's as its part of the ignition circuit.

Does anyone recognise this part, its also not a volvo penta part.

The entire panel seems to be different to that shown in the owners manual.

If the LED in this alien unit replaces the filament bulb for the "no charge" warning light in the standard VP panel then the alternator will probably not be getting the initial excitation current it requires to start generating.

Try a 50 ohm resistance in parallel with the GEN LED. I assume it lights up.

Interestingly my Volvo instrument panel has only gauges NO warning lights except for the glow plugs. The alternators seem to manage to charge OK.
