The tachos on my Tamd71a engines have all given up the ghost. VP want £200+ each and I need 4?
I found some on the internet at £31 each inc. delivery. They were easy to fit and calibrate and include digital hour meter.
Anyone interested let me know and I’ll forward the suppliers details.

Do they work off the pulse generator as there not alternator driven on your engine?

How have they given up the ghost?

The originals were driven from the magnetic senders. I have connected them to the “w” terminals on the alternators. However the suppliers can supply compatible senders at about £25 !!! I haven’t tried these so I can’t vouch for them.

Over about a year they became intermitant and have gradually stopped working altogether. I had tried the airing cupboard solution to no avail.

Is it the RPM or hour counters that have failed?

All 4 rpm & 3. Hr meters.

Can’t help thinking that the chances of 4 rev counters failing in the same year are remote. So looking for failure in what they have in common and my money goes on a weakening magnetic sensor. However job done and appreciate your sharing of information.

The magnetic sensors and wiring were tested and were fine. In fact I used 1 of each of the sender wires to connect to the alternator with a short extension and disconnected the second wire (+ from the old tachos).

I know it's an old post but I have to failed volvo penta tachos on my princess and I was wondering how do I pick aftermarket one that could be a replacement of my old ones ? Thank you
