I need an exhaust riser and am weighing up costs of having one built or buying the part.
It is Volvo part 3581031 which this website

http://www.marinepartseurope.com/nl/volvo-penta-explosietekening-7740690-25-4166.aspx

says fits my engine MD2020 (actually it's a perkins perama M20 but it's the same engine I'm told)

However local engineer says it doesn't = and only fits MD 2030 2040

Anybody know for sure while I weigh up dosh options

As shown it is a riser to ensure there is enough hight to ensure the exhaust has a drop to its outlet as opposed to the standard injection only bend which is a Perkins part. So both answers may be correct but not for you.
If the riser is required the bend will be inadequate and water may get back into engine.

As to whether you fit the exitisting type which is water cooled or fit a fabricated unit that would depend on several factors such as cost, practicality of insulating, unsupported weight & availability.

I think that you will find that there is a supply of fabricated units for Yanmars etc so it is worth looking.

A bit cheaper here. Says it fits them all.

It is not very clear - which is why I think the OP is asking. Although it talks about exhaust problems on the whole range it actually says this part fits 2030 and 2040. No mention of 2020.
The only way to be sure is to ask Volvo direct (hopefully they at least will know).

The normal exhaust elbow part 861906 fits 2020, 2030 & 2040. So if riser fits 2030/2040, must fit 2020 as its instead of not as well as.

If you look at http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-explodedview-7740690-25-4166.aspx (the official spares distributor) it does say fits 2020C and 2020D.
However it doesn't mention 2020A or B.
The 2020A page http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-cat-7746800.aspx doesn't show it.
Ah the 2020B page http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-explodedview-7746410-25-4166.aspx does show it.
http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-861906-exhaust-pipe-elbow.aspx this page shows that the standard exhaust elbow 861906 fits all of them!
So heavy odds it will fit i should think.

How you can find which the Perama matches i don't know I'm afraid.
What year is it? If you look at the VP website you can see which years the 2020 A, B, C and D were produced.

Thanks for all the research! Engine is pretty old - mid eighties I think - and still going strong in spite of water in the manifold more than once. In all the confusion I think I'll try and get one on a sale or return basis = latest info I have is that it fits earlier MD2020 models - but in later ones it collides with a bigger heat exchanger and needs a "spacer" - tra la la - nothing's ever simple

It fits.

If anyone was interested exhaust riser for volvo md2030 40 etc (Volvo part number 3581031) DOES fit perkins perama M20. (because I've fitted it - after an interesting battle removing old studs) it also apparently fits earlier versions of volvo md2020 -I'm told later ones had a bigger heat exchanger. Hopefully this will be the end of water in manifold problems!

Which one did you buy then, who from and what cost? I have the perkins perama 103-06 (same as Volvo 2020) and I am just about to fit the engine in my son's Westerly Tiger. The engine came out of a canal boat on keel cooling so I am also looking for a tube stack.

I thought I just needed to buy a bent exhaust job with the water injector connection, don't think I will need the riser but the elbows look well expensive.

I found mine on a used ad (only been used about twenty times) and paid £175 - the cheapest elsewhere I have seen is this lot who make generators at £204 + VAT

http://www.wellandpower.net/

If you buy them from Volvo etc they will cost you the thick end of £400

My engine was installed in Belgium I think - number KB 30293J 07053T which I think is early eighties.
