I have just bought a cruisers 224 with a volvo penta outdrive the boat is now out of warranty and the outdrive isnt staying up when I put it up any ideas ?

Almost certainly a leak in the hydraulic system.

First check that there is some fluid in the hydraulic resevoir from inside the boat - if that seems ok and you can't see fluid swilling around the engine bay (normally red in colour), chances are the leak is on the outdrive end.

This means getting the boat out of the water and inspecting the hoses and ram seals for a leak.

Cruisers 224 - great boat - I've got one myself

The leaks couldbe internal or external. External leaks will show us as a spill either inside the boat or outside as a slick. An external leak will also require regular topping up as the oil escapes from the system.

An internal leak will meanthat the oil is passing back along the lines back into the pump and no fluid loss will be seen and no topping up will be required.

Out of interest -
If you run out of oil or its well below level, leak etc and system draws air (if it can ? ) into pipes or rams will it self bleed once its topped up and lose any air or is it a lift out and bleed off.
Post a couple of weeks ago was drive lowering a bit overnight - poss air in system ?
Any knowledge ?

I have a Volvo 280 leg - and apparently that doesn't!

It's a lift for "getting over shallow objects" and it will drop back down.

The only ones that stay "up" are the "Power Trim" models - check which you have.

There is a valve (or two) within the hydraulic pump to stop the leg creeping down. If this gets any much or grit in it hydraulic fluid can creep past it and cause the leg to fall. It can be stripped and cleaned
