Volvo Penta MD32A

I'm looking at a boat with a 1977 Volvo Penta MD32A with 3,600 hours. Previous post tend to slate this engine. This particular one appears to be well maintained but I'm unsure. Seems pretty thirsty too at 5.5l / hr at cruising speed for a 12t motor sailer. What's the view?

I have two of them and hate them,they were never great engines and getting spares is becomming a nightmare,if i had the money spare, id swap them out in a heartbeat,It only my opinion,but id look for something a little more current as far as the engines go.

This is the best application for them they last far longer as an auxiliary in a larger sailing boat when they are usually governed down to about 3000prm max 75hp? and quite pleasant to live with but even in this case I would suspect that it's past it's sell by date now.If you like the boat and can get it for a price that will allow for replacing the engine sooner or later go for it but expect you will have to replace it.
5.5 ltr hr is about 25hp in real terms so well under stressed

my yacht has an MD 21A which I think is teh four cylinder version of the same engine. It has similar hours also. Its rated to max 3000RPM in a yacht so very unstressed. I negotiated a discount when i bought the yacht on the basis that it had had 95% of its life. Still got it 6 years later

I’m looking for the input elbow for the heat exchanger on a Volvo Penta MD-32A. Also might be interested in the entire heat exchanger casting. If you don’t have these items, any ideas where I might look? Thank you
