Just out of curiosity what cruising rpm do you usually run your MD2030 engine?
To start with, 2500-2600 rpm.

Usually 2,200 rpm. Mainly because it feels about right. Resulting speed seems to be entirely dependant on fouling of hull!

Also, it seems to be the minimum speed that the alternator kicks in at. i.e. gives 13.6v at the batteries.

1500-2000 if I'm going somewhere gently, 2200 if I am in a hurry. I get 14v much lower than 2200 revs

Sorry, maybe I should have mentioned cruising rpm during motoring, not motor-sailing.

2000 rpm

2000 rpm = 5 knots
2500 rpm = 6 knots
3200 rpm = 7.2 knots (and dug-in transom!)

ps .... alternator kicks in immediately on tickover = 800 rpm ..ish

Motor-sailing I'd set the revs to bring the boat up to kn5.5. Often something like 1200 -1500

I suppose it must depend on the boat/keel/length/weight/prop. etc. I think the manual says somethink about percentage OFF top speed/rpm for the best cruising rpm/speed. ca. 2700/2800 rpm?

Exactly. And that's why I am asking. Cruising speed is near 2700-2800 but people tend to go at much lower rpm.
