Volvo Penta MD2030 "lazy" gearbox

OK, so I pumped out the ATF and replaced with SAE 15W/40. No change to the result: reverse engages instantly but forward is slow, in fact it won't engage unless I dethrottle, wait, listen for the engagement, then throttle ahead. I'm going with your advice and that of Ceejay to redrain and refill to improve the quality. Can't get my head around why reverse would work but forward not with the same oil.

By the way PaulRainbow, is there a difference between diesel SAE 15W/40 and other types of SAE 15W/40?

I have just filled mine with engine oil and have yet to try it,your experience doesnt fill me with confidence.

When I cured mine it was single grade mineral SAE40 Diesel engine oil that I used.

No significant difference in this application.
