HI! I have a Volvo Penta MD2030 B. Compression on the 3 cylinders is 370psi all the same. The thing is I am getting lots of smoke comming out from the exhaust. It smells like burnt oil. Thought it was the Injectors so I changed them when they came out charcol bleck. It did the same to the new ones. The engine has lots of power. Could it be the valve stem seals? I am definitely burning oil.
Any help will be much appreciated.

Consistent and high compression does suggest stem seals rather than a bore/piston ring issue; as the youngest MD20x0 is over 20 years old it's quite feasible the seals need changing.

Welcome, I'm unfamiliar with the engine, many here will be, but could it be the air inlet, or over injection causing such richness?

Air inlet is good. Just changed the air filter but I will send the injection pump and injectors to de serviced and calibrated together. Fingers crossed!!!
Thanks a lot!

Have you checked the exhaust elbow as these coke up. The injection pump and injectors rarely need any attention. I had a 2030 that did 3500 hours in my ownership without touching the injectors.

I'm possibly going off on a tangent, but having just replaced the air filter, did the smokiness begin immediately afterwards, which (I know you'll know this) might mean that there was a screen on the filter, to keep it pristine after manufacturing, that wasn't removed prior to fitting? Please don't feel affronted, I've done that sort of thing......?

Dont waste your money doing that! As Tranona said, the exhaust elbows get blocked on these and it can cause smoking because of incomplete combustion. Is the oil level going down inthe sump dramatically?

The air "filter" is just a bit of foam stretched over a wire cage. Does not really do anything.

I will remove the air filter and check any obstructions.

Happened to me - the exhaust elbow only had a 10mm diameter hole in the centre - tried cleaning but my screwdriver went through the cast iron elbow, so new elbow - not cheap, try Perkins equivalent as the engine is the same except for the colour.

Exactly when does it smoke, tick over, part load, full chat, when initially accelerating?
What colour smoke and what does it smell of?
How much oil does it burn as a percentage of fuel?
Is the prop definitely not fouled?
